Kernel Development Engineers implement the team's technical direction in their work with the upstream Linux community, and the Kernels distributed internally.
They dive into reported kernel issues and provide detailed analysis and changes that can be upstreamed.
They are comfortable doing so independently or as part of a small project teams.
The baseline individual for this role will be comfortable with the Linux Kernel and understand how to develop in languages such as C, Assembly and Python in a Linux environment.
Experience with Linux package management, version control systems, automated build processes, and software unit testing are a must.
Knowledge in Linux kernel internals is required for this role.
An understanding of and experience in contributing to open source projects is a plus.
About the team The Kernel and Operating System group is responsible for the design and maintenance of all of Amazon's core compute platforms, with a special focus on EC2, the Elastic Compute Cloud that is the basis for much of Amazon Web Services (AWS).
We're also responsible for tools associated with the performance characterization, qualification, build and deployment of our Linux platforms.
The Amazon Linux Kernel team is responsible for the providing secure, reliable, robust and performant kernel for EC2 platforms.
The Amazon Linux Kernel is our flagship product.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets.
The base pay for this position ranges from $115,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $223,600/year in our highest geographic market.
Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
Amazon is a total compensation company.
