The College of Built Environments has an outstanding opportunity for a manager of computing.
This position collaborates with faculty, staff, and students to create a future vision of information technology for the College of Built Environments (CBE).
They also provide management and direction to the College for computer support including the management of college computing facilities, labs, and staff.
Position Complexities: Develop and apply new technology to the current structure of the College computing systems.
Keep abreast of new hardware and applications relevant to the CBE disciplines.
Integrate this information to anticipate future computing requirements of the College; recommend and apply approaches that complement developments in built-environments scholarship and its professions.
Respond to the differing needs and levels of computing skills across the College.
Assist with lab construction and maintenance of College research and general access computer labs.
Ensure CBE compliance with UW data security initiatives.
Align CBE Computing with the College’s three pillars identified in its strategic framework: collaboration and impact, bold thought leadership, and equitable and just practices.
Support UW-IT’s strategy of good technology, well-delivered, for a better University.
Position Dimensions and Impact to the University: Improve the UW’s capacity to provide training and support for current faculty, staff, and students in the CBE disciplines with the most updated computer skills, equipment, and software available.
Prepare students to use the most current software in their discipline.
Provide College administration with access to the UW’s most updated programs in order to streamline administrative functions.
Without these abilities, we lose the ability to provide basic education and training functions and increase our research, teaching, and service.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES IT Management (60%) Administration of LAN, servers, classroom setup, hardware and software problem solving, strategic planning, and technology needs assessment; supervise installation, upgrades, security.
Supervision and management of CBE computer network consisting of desktops and classroom machines of various models and operating systems, servers, software licenses, and printers; manage College computing infrastructure, providing support to departmental staff, faculty, student users, and classrooms; assess and gather user feedback on the effectiveness of those systems.
Coordinate hardware, software, and training policies around technology for the College.
Partner with CBE Marketing & Communications director to provide indirect supervision to Web Developer.
Team Management (20%) Management and supervision of the computing technical team including recruitment, hiring, training, and retention of permanent technical staff personnel; assign work and monitor progress of assigned work; oversight of Assistant Director of Computing’s management of hourly student assistants.
Improve processes to allow the team to better serve students, faculty, and staff members; refine and improve Computing’s use of in-person and remote modes of support to meet evolving user needs.
Technology leadership and Liaison to UW-IT (20%) Maintain communication network with people in similar positions in other colleges and universities to assist in updating of computer programs for educational and research purposes; contribute to and implement the development of a plan for technology in the College that supports the CBE strategic framework, with the oversight of the Director of Operations and College leadership; prioritize competing requests for service in accordance with priorities established by the Director of Operations and College leadership; maintain and publish knowledge of new policies and regulations; analyze the impact of these policies on the College and recommend methods for compliance; oversee and coordinate technology plans for the College, coordinating with other major support units as needed; seek funding to support new computing initiatives; manage biennial computing budget; provide technical information, advice, and assistance in the preparation of Student Technology Fee and other proposals that include computing equipment, classroom technology, and software; maintain and upgrade computer hardware and software to ensure that the administrative functions of CBE run uninterrupted; maintain and upgrade computer hardware and software to ensure that computer labs are functional for teaching, research, and service purposes; serve as technical liaison with other computing facilities and personnel on campus; coordinate with Assistant Director of Computing to advise faculty and staff with computer purchases; supervise staff to insure and tag new equipment; oversee Assistant Director of Computing’s leadership of biannual inventory on computer equipment; understand new technologies and work with committees, clients, and technical staff to bring technologies to the College environment; keep up to date with the development of new technologies through regular training and attendance at expos and conferences as well as through periodical literature.
Lead Responsibilities: Schedules, organizes, and assigns projects to members of the IT team.
Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Responsible to hire, train, oversee, and conduct annual reviews for 4.
0 FTE Computing Specialists and a team of hourly student assistants.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Management, or related field At least 4-5 years of experience in heterogeneous network management consisting of mostly Apple and Windows computers, file servers, and various web servers.
Demonstrated experience in working with multiple users and coordinating projects within that framework Demonstrated ability to successfully manage a computing budget for a comparably sized organization Demonstrated ability to manage a diverse range of activities in visible and pressured environments, consulting with the appropriate parties for guidance, exercising independent judgment in resolving problems Demonstrated ability to communicate, through verbal and written means, with a diverse body of people who have various levels of technical skills Demonstrated ability to manage diverse teams Demonstrated ability to implement computer plans, policies, and priorities developed by user-groups or committees.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Experience working with computer teaching labs as well as computer research labs.
Demonstrated ability to assist faculty and students with varying skill levels to improve their computing abilities.
Experience working in a major university teaching and administrative environment.
Demonstrated interest in computing as research.
